Chiefs to retire Thomas’ No. 58 jersey on Dec. 6
June 24, 2009

Linebacker Derrick Thomas had more of his 126 1/2 career sacks against Denver’s John Elway than against any other opposing quarterback.

Thomas knocked down Elway, a future Hall of Famer, 17 times. So it’s fitting the Chiefs will honor the late Thomas for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at their Dec. 6 game against the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs will retire Thomas’ number 58 jersey and present his Hall of Fame ring to his family at a halftime ceremony that day.

Thomas will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Aug. 8 in Canton, Ohio.

He will become the 10th player in Chiefs history to have his jersey number retired, following kicker Jan Stenerud (3), quarterback Len Dawson (16), cornerback Emmitt Thomas (18), running backs Abner Haynes (28), Stone Johnson (33) and Mack Lee Hill (36), linebackers Willie Lanier (63) and Bobby Bell (78) and defensive tackle Buck Buchanan (86).

All but Haynes, Johnson and Hill are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Thomas was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2001. The Chiefs also named their annual most valuable player award after Thomas.
