Thomas' 58 Will Adorn Pace Car at Wyandotte Track
Feb. 9, 2000
Pace cars don't normally have numbers. The one at Kansas Speedway Corporation's track will.
The number will be 58, and it will be there to honor Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas.
Grant Lynch, president of Kansas Speedway Corporation, made the announcement at a ceremony Wednesday at the track site in Wyandotte County.
Lynch said Thomas was an avid auto-racing fan and was to be the corporation's guest at next week's Daytona 500.
Thomas unexpectedly died Tuesday at a hospital in Miami, where he was being treated for paralyzing injuries suffered in an auto accident in January.
The No. 58 -- which was Thomas' with the Chiefs -- will adorn the rear quarterpanels of the Ford Taurus pace car.
Lynch said the number will serve as more than just a remembrance.
"It will be to convey the message of safety," Lynch said. "Hey, remember 58, buckle up."
The track, currently under construction, is scheduled to open for racing in 2001.
