Broncos Comment on Death of Derrick Thomas
Feb. 10, 2000
DE Neil Smith: "It’s beyond words, what I can say. I’m in a state of shock myself. The only thing I can say is my prayers go out to Derrick’s family. Derrick, in his own way, what he’s done on the field and off the field in Kansas City, speak for itself. Only friends and family can tell you what a great person he was. Unfortunately, Mike (Tellis) died in that accident (Jan. 23), and at least Derrick got to be with us for another week, and at least could talk to people. As a personal friend, I’m just praying for Derrick’s family."
CB Dale Carter: “It’s a sad day for Derrick’s family, and it’s a sad day for me. It’s unfortunate that this happened. It still doesn’t quite seem real to me. It definitely makes you think about and appreciate all that you have, and your family. I offer my condolences, and my prayers go out to his family. I’m just shocked and saddened right now.”
Former QB John Elway: "I was deeply saddened today by the news of the untimely death of Derrick Thomas. Derrick the football player was a powerful competitor with remarkable talent and aptitude. He epitomized the heart, courage and spirit it takes to be an outstanding player.
"More importantly, Derrick Thomas the man was a philanthropist who gave so much to his family and his community. He will be remembered fondly for all of the lives he touched during his 33 years with us.
"My family’s thoughts and prayers are with Derrick’s family. He will long be remembered in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed."
