Crowds Small for 2nd Day of Thomas Estate Sale
March 30, 2001

In part because of surprisingly small crowds, organizers at the Derrick Thomas estate sale have dropped prices by at least 20 percent.

The reduction started late Friday afternoon, the second day of the three-day event. At 9 a.m. today, the 20-percent reduction will again apply. By the end of the afternoon, the discount could get as high as 50 percent.

"We haven't had near the crowds we expected," said Sgt. John Bullard, who is coordinating security and traffic-control efforts for the Independence police department.

"Not as busy, by far."

On Thursday morning, just hours after the sale first started, a crowd of more than 100 people stood in line outside Thomas' house. Some fans waited for hours to get in.
All day Friday, however, there was no waiting at all.

"When I walked in," said Michelle Ross, who spent $30, "it seemed like there were 25 or 30 cops but only 15 people looking at stuff."

Organizers sold a handful of big-ticket items Friday: the second of two Sea Doo water crafts ($3,900), a 70-inch TV ($2,250), a leather sofa ($800) and an air-hockey table ($200).

But no more than 600 people strolled through the house, half the number that visited on Thursday.

Organizers hoped to generate more than $650,000 through the three-day sale but only did about $45,000 worth of business on Thursday. On Friday afternoon, they declined to disclose how much money they generated in sales.

"I'm afraid so much of the media hype and attention has been a double-edged sword," said Sara Pennington, co-owner of the company that's handling the sale. "I think it has scared a lot of people off."
