Thomas Sale Wraps Up
April 1, 2001
The estate sale of Derrick Thomas' personal possessions came to a close Sunday.
Late in the afternoon, shoppers sifted through what was left of mostly small items: CDs, football cards, T-shirts, posters, shoes. A handful of police officers even stood around in Thomas' bedroom, trying on several of Thomas' unsold suits.
Sale organizers, who originally planned to end the sale Saturday, instead plastered "50 percent off" signs all over the house and kept the sale going one more day.
"We had enough merchandise that was still sellable," said Sara Pennington, co-owner of the company that handled the sale. "We felt like, to do the estate justice, we needed to try another day.
"It was well worth it."
Sales were brisk both Saturday and Sunday.
Estate officials won't know until today the total dollars generated during the sale and which of the sealed bids on 21 different items -- such as Thomas' two Mercedes and two Rolex watches -- were legitimate.
